That seems very questionable to me. For one thing, the general feeling about Xorg was that it was aging and the powers that be were concerned about keeping it secure. While that doesn’t directly accuse Xorg of being insecure, with the number of updates to plug holes and the interest in moving on, I can’t understand why anyone would want to BACK UP to an earlier version. It’s difficult enough to support it as is; supporting a repeatedly patched code set may have been one reason for creating something else. The urge for software developers to add more and more feature creep, and hardware vendors YEARNING for reasons to sell increasingly complex, hungry, expensive hardware and those developers wanting to keep their jobs and work on new things all add up to plenty of motivation to create an Xorg++ ( or Xorg–) depending on your opinion and convictions in all of it.

While some things are vital and the heavy use of the Internet for communication and commerce, in other ways, the wide open Internet BEFORE this time sure felt “nicer”. I had the privilege of using it BEFORE we had to lock it down to keep the bad guys out. That was BEFORE it was used to BUY and SELL things! Once that happened, the people trying to TAKE things emerged and networking has never been the same since. Oh yes, when Windows 95 was introduced and Microsoft purchased the rights to use the Rolling Stones “Start Me Up” song in their advertising, IF things hadn’t gotten shady before that time, it sure went that way after that point in time!
