I also recently had an old PC whose hard drive failed on me. Since I had a USB portable external hard drive available I thought I would try using it. My favorite OS is actually MX Linux, which is what was installed on the PC before the hard drive quit on me. I didn’t know if it would run on the external hard drive but thought why not give it a try, nothing to lose but time. It installed and ran but way too slow with frequent disk I/O (input/output) bottlenecks. This was before I had tried antiX, once I discovered antiX the solution was obvious, try that on the PC with the external hard drive. It was indeed like magic, PC now runs fine with no hard drive..lol… who would have thunk it. I know one thing for sure, though I haven’t really had time to use it all that much yet, antiX is looking very promising to me.
