Hi!
I’ve mostly got things working nicely on my install of antiX.
But I just encountered a wee problem. I wanted to use Homebank for my usual bookkeeping and all that.
But I got a message saying that my Homebank file was made for a newer version. Seems I’ve been using Homebank 5.23 on my other computer, but Homebank installs as version 5.09 with antiX.
I couldn’t figure out how to upgrade Homebank itself.
Does anyone know if there is any (sort of) quick way to update applications like that through the terminal?

Yup! You simply install and use Windows! There you need to update each and every single app individually. 😉
Seriously, it very much depends about on how did you install your app. Usually, there’s no way at all to upgrade a single app because of the all dependencies.
In ‘normal’ case, in Linux you’d install your apps through the repository which means, you’re getting the version that’s in repository and not the newest.
For example, the newest version of some app SOME_APP is on version 6.0.4 but you’re still using/getting the version 5.2.2 out of the repositories.
If you always want the newest versions of apps, you’ll not use Linux on the first place and if you do, you’ll not use anything Debian based.
Sometimes, you can get some apps directly from the developers website, like Telegram, for example. That’s the best way to get the apps.
Then, all you need is, download, unpack and run — the app itself will take care about all the rest (incl. updates/upgrades).
In case you’re installing the same app from the Distro repositories, you’ll be a couple of versions behind.
That’s why the PPA’s and recently AppImage, FlatPak and Snaps are getting so popular.
Every OS has it’s own advantages and disadvantages.

The newest version of homebank I could find, which will certainly install without problems, because it is backported for debian stretch
is the one from the mx-test-repo
homebank-data_5.1.8-0.1~mx17+1_all.deb

http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test/h/homebank/Not sure if it is new enough for your homebank-file, but maybe worth a try.
Or wait for antiX19 (??coming soon??), which will be debian buster (vers.5.2.2-1)

Okay, thanks for the information.
This is just my emergency back up computer sort of thing, so if I can’t get everything working on it, that’s not a big deal.

If you can’t get a new enough version in the repos, but can get the source, expecially easy if it’s on github, simply download the source, check for a README or INSTALL file, download the dependencies (and corresponding “-dev” (headers), follow the instructions and build it yourself (usually ./configure; make; sudo make install; or some variant thereof), no need to install Winblows!

Truth but, it could have been anything else too. That was just an example. Libre Office 5.x.x in Debian repos and I’m using 6.xx for years already.
Latest repository version of Raw Therapee in my Neon is at 5.3-1 and there is a snap already at 5.6, latest … and on, and on.… simply download the source, check for a README or INSTALL file, download the dependencies …, follow the instructions and build it yourself

Once I went on some professional development training. I had Solus and needed (simply) to install MySQL Workbench (and ‘some dependencies‘). 😉
I started VBox and a couple of “continue, continue, continues’s” minutes later, I had it up ‘n’ running.
There’s simple and ‘simple’.
