connman mostly connects automatically, but occasionally, on a cold boot, the connection doesn’t happen. it will eventually connect. my hardware in this case is pretty crappy so it may be unrelated to connman and more related to slow hardware (s21e with broadcom wireless).
really, really like the Boot Rescue menus. Used it to get into the system UEFI/bios, which was a nice touch. also booted an installed system from the live UEFI grub menus. too cool.
fluxbox did not have an applications menu on first boot. got one after I did a manual update-menus from the menu. also, the desktop files on the spacefm desktop appear to be empty. icewm and jwm appeared fine from what I could tell.
if anyone runs into their brightness being turned to 0 on intel hardware, try i915.invert_brightness=1.
