If nouveau (the nvidia open source module) doesn’t work for you (it works for many other users here with similar nvidia hardware), either install a newer Linux kernel (for better nouveau support) or install the nvidia-legacy-340xx legacy drivers, which seem compatible for your hardware. Using the nvidia-detect-mx program from the control centre drivers tab should help if you want to go the legacy route.
