apparently there are FOUR variations of time variations :

1) atime - access time
2) ctime - change (metadata) time
3) mtime - status modification time (the default) and
4) birth - time: birth creation 

We’ll probably want a way to view all of these variations of time in the file manager, though mtime is the one that we use most of the time.
