Maybe we consider different subsets of English wording as basic since we both are non native speakers 🙂
The core instructions are (compare with screenshot below) :
– 1.) This entry is a translatable long form command line option.
– 2.) Use precisely the same wording you have translated to in the translation of respective tab names above already.
– 3.) If your language requires a translation to more than a single word, replace all blanks inside by underline or dash. (or whatever you consider suitable other than characters possibly understood as field separators by the shell)
– 4.) Add as many blanks behind the (joined) word as needed to line up the following short forms; all these entries must have the same total length.
After this the examples follow, with intended proper blanc counts in translation, which are messed up by transifex unfortunately, which again is explained in an appended „string instruction”, since the developers notes are not editable in transifex for us once a resource is uploaded. Unfortunately transifex places string instructions above the dev notes, so it is impossible to get a clear structure into this at transifex… They simply shouldn’t eat the blanks in the first place, then there is no need to explain that additionally; the extra “string instruction” (which should live below the dev notes here) could be dropped or wouldn’t have been written at all. Transifex is a mess in this concern. I guess we’ll have simply to live with these shortcomings.
But what is not clear in the sentence living in the example section: „Makes here (as an example) 14 characters total, so then: …all the other entries also must have 14 characters length total.” Should the word example be repeated in the end of the sentence again to make absolutely clear that 14 chars is not a fixed general limit but only applies to this very example?
“Pad these category names to the SAME LENGTH, by adding spaces to the end- E.g. pad to 3-4 characters longer than your longest translated category name, because they will appear like a table.”
Seems your explanation proposal covers merely the last requirement, while it is longer already, more verbose than my fourth instruction sentence. But you are right, the word “padding behind” is a good suggestion instead of my stiff “Add as many blanks behind as needed”. This had not come to my mind spontaneously, sorry.
