– I do not have an issue with switching away from sysvinit as default, however I would not suggest to remove it completely and this is for a few reasons
* Although many forum users prefer to use the runit vesions, I feel (sourceforge download stats would back this) that the silent majority are enjoying the stabilty & support that sysvinit offers for various services.
* This could may well be due the fact that sysvinit is the default iso download option, but it might also be due to specific requirements for many use cases.
* Even from a change management point of view it makes sense to deprecate the main init system before making the decision to totally remove it (while viable to still retain it). Sysvinit despite popular belief is still being developed & supported uptream (runit on the other hand – not so much).I agree with this.
I did not comment as I am not clear on the reasoning for removal and ultimately it is not my time being offered to produce the iso sets. I have been using the sysv versions for the systems that are setup and forget about systems. Which for some of the “commercial” software was built expecting sysv or systemd. For this I have regarded this as simply needing another step in the installation and configuration of the system.I also agree with this.
Sysvinit is still being supported upstream.
But Debian is not providing sysVinit files that go in /etc/init.d for many packages. They are in the process of removing them.
