@blur13, If you’re up for a few more experiments, try installing either Alpha 1 or Alpha 1 init-diversity, adjust the repositories to point to Trixie rather than Testing and then apply/install the packages you noted and see how far you get.
I had one experiment like that work for a little while, but I messed it all up at a reboot. So for now I have antiX 23.2 Full Runit as my main distribution and I have another antiX Sid instance; that one gets “polluted” a bit at times because I’m not particularly careful about what I install, but like your experiment, it’s just a bridge.
I also tried out Debian during the testing, and then at the release. Other than the 1) systemD, which is really a complete system management suite in addition to the init, and 2) the boot loader, which wants to be the primary boot loader, and it also attempt to shore everything beneath /boot/efi, rather than just the efi component, which in turn makes it necessary to create a much larger boot partition, it continues to be a reliable, stable system, it just puts too much in clustered places and removes a lot of the flexible stuff I once enjoyed there as much as I enjoy our system.
So Debian is still very good software, but it without question butts heads with our preferences of keeping every component lean and minimal. Some people like the integrated management, others detest it; that’s really the fundamental trade-off that’s taking place, and also the fact that Red Hat is owned and operated by one of the largest corporations in the world. The good part is that the system as a whole does indeed work well, the bad part is that it’s heavy handed and corporate controlled.
I took it off my system after testing it because I objected to how it organized the boot loader and I didn’t want to redesign my layout, at least not until I have a complete range of 2025 and 2026 systems; then I may consider redoing my layout again.
In the meantime, I risk messing up one partition with “Sid”-like stuff which might try to sneak some of that Debianista stuff in; I’m not watching it very closely because I’ll probably be scrapping it in a month or two.
