    Solved it – just had to get the system to create a new xorg.conf. Ran a
    sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

    and rebooted, and now xrandr and arandr recognize both the laptop monitor and the HDMI connected TV, and give numerous display size options for each. Must have been an xorg glitch of some sort.
