Baked-In App removal / update
The system comes with a number of nifty applications already baked-in, which get layered into the filesystem. However, you may want to use an updated version, or remove some from view. Without having duplication, or lots of menu editing before adding an updated application back with synaptic, here’s how:
For example, I have no need of games. Let’s say I want to use the latest version of the Gnumeric spreadsheet instead as well.
1) Menu > Setup > Remove built-in packages
BE CAREFUL HERE. What happens to the best of my knowledge is that when a baked-in app is removed, it is merely “whitelisted”. It is still part of the system at boot, it is just not an active participant. Thus is saves no space. A permanent change making your own “drive of applications” is beyond the scope here.
I suggest that if you DO remove a built-in, do it one at a time between reboots to make sure it is whitelisted properly. Then go ahead and use synaptic to pull in the latest version. Of course simply removing games needs nothing else.
Would sure like to see something *simple* like Timeshift backup baked in (to avoid a catch-22 of not having it when you need it!), but again that’s beyond the scope here. One can always do the file-management thing of simply backing up their savefile or folder and do it that way too.
Update: see my earlier remarks about Menu > Utility > Pupsave Backup. Works.
Anyway, I’m having a lot of fun and making it mine.
