Thanks Xunxi! You are the first one to tip me off to this, so I’m grateful.
That pushed me into thinking about booting solely into bios/uefi and staying there for a long time was a PM kind of thing. What wait until your disk dies?
Another alternative, at least for usb sticks is to do this – make sure your ports don’t go into powersuspend by adding to the kernel paramaters:
usbcore.autosuspend=-1
Then, you can insert sticks to whatever ports you have available and let them sit there overnight and still be able to use the computer. But I’d be sure to UNmount them if they get mounted automatically. The antiX unmount tool is pretty awesome to make sure.
External ssd’s in their own usb cases might have auto shutdown anyway, so one might have to put them inside the computer proper.
I even do my manual formatting with F2FS, and “over-provision” 20% of the capacity of free-space. But I’m not obsessing though. 🙂
