Update:
Those Pentium Ms (L2 cache = 2 MB) in Dell Latitude D600 turned out to support PAE, they just lack the PAE flag.
So I was eventually able to install the latest MX-Linux 23.6 i386 (kernel 6.1.0-33-686-PAE).
The trick to boot the Live USB distro (and to have PAE active post-installation) was to supply the following option before booting:
forcepae — forcepae
(that at the end of the line with other parameters, starting with quiet).
Note the double dash in between the double word forcepae – you must enter it precisely like that (with a space after the previous parameter, of course).
