I’ve only used herbstluftwm a few times.
The page https://herbstluftwm.org/herbstluftwm.html does discuss vertical
and horizontal frames. There are many options for focus, edge, etc.
but I’m hardly the person to interpret what they mean.
Does this document provide adequate explanation for your level of experience
with herbstluftwm?
I tried a “search AI” and it came up with this suggestion; again, due
to my own lack of experience with herbstluftwm I am not certain this
is helpful; perhaps you can educate us as we continue this discussion:
To create a vertical split in herbstluftwm without any frame windows,
you can use the command herbstclient split vertical 0.5 after starting
herbstluftwm. This will split the currently focused frame into two
vertical subframes, allowing you to manage your windows more effectively.
