Here I can see symlinks in the list… could you please provide examples of missing timezones, so I can try to understand what’s wrong?

The gist of things is that there are up to two levels beyond /usr/share/zoneinfo.
In the /usr/share/zoneinfo/US directory, there are many entries, all soft links
to entries in /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/
so neither /usr/share/zoneinfo/America nor /usr/share/zoneinfo/US is sufficient to access
the various time zones in the USA. I did not examine other regions, but any continent or region
wider than a few hundred miles has multiple timezones, so there has to be a way to get at least
one more level past /usr/share/zoneinfo/$newtz. Does that make sense?
