At one point, I needed to upgrade my Python version. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available for Debian Bullseye, which was the base of the antiX version I was usinng. So I had to manually compile Python from source and install it locally(didn’t install system-wide in fear of braking something).
At the same time, my years-old Manjaro installation was running a much newer Python version out of the box already, which made me a bit frustrated with the codename-based release cycle style used in Debian.
On another occasion, I needed to downgrade VLC Media Player to an older version. In Manjaro, the downgrade package makes it very easy to revert to a previous version, but I couldn’t find an equivalent method in antiX. Again, I was forced to compile VLC from source.
These experiences — package unavailability and version limitations — are part of what made me miss Arch, aside from the convenience of pacman, even though I dislike heavy, buggy systemd.
And I wasn’t aware of antiX SID, so thanks for letting me know about it. It have Python higher than 3.9 in it ?
P.S : Also I understand keeping packages legacy-style is what makes Antix stable and optimized especially for older hardwares. So I was not blaming Antix for not updating like Arch do.
