@greyowl – either way – I’d recommend via package installer.
You get both firefox and firefox-esr. They shouldn’t conflict.
Once you have the new version of firefox installed, any new versions will be picked up by apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade/synaptic/package-installer (once I have uploaded the new debs of course).
