    Mono is an open – source project that provides an implementation of the.NET Framework, including the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and a set of class libraries. It allows developers to write applications in languages like C#, VB.NET, and F# and run them on multiple operating systems, including Linux, macOS, and BSD.

    So IF you have some applications that run using any of those byte-code based languages – for instance, I use fvim and it has F# code – then you’ll need this library. Same if you have any C# code or any VB code. Note that this is NOT MSFT code, it’s an open source project to implement the Common Language Runtime.
