I am using USB on a PCMCIA expansion slot
This is most likely a question of drivers, which need to be loaded before you can access the device, while BIOS, Grub, Plop, Syslinux etc don’t have support for this specific PCMCIA expansion device, so the driver for it is only loaded after initial boot stages have been passed already, and causing to fail booting when trying to access it in early boot stages already.

I was trying to run text files written in DOS format while Linux uses UNIX. So editing files in Nano and Leafpad, I first needed to run “dos2unix” if the files were made using notepad in Windows.
No need for that dos2unix detour in antiX, no headaches any longer: Try Geany instead, it can read and write text files in Unix AND Windows format both, and even UTF16 Apple files, right out of the box. That’s (among other) why it is preinstalled in all antiX full versions. If the package antiX23-desktop-files is installed on your device, you’ll find it in the Utilities Menu as »Text editor (“Geany”)«, otherwise in the Development menu named simply »Geany«.
Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.
