Firewall Settings
You may need to make exceptions to allow the following ports and protocols in your firewall settings to successfully make and receive connections with HopToDesk:
TCP Ports: 80 and 443
UDP Ports: 49152-65535
If you only will be using HopToDesk on your LAN or connecting by IP address using the “Enable direct IP access” option, then only TCP port 21118 must be allowed on the receiving device an no other ports required.
Direct IP Access
HopToDesk supports direct IP access by default. Simply enter in the IP address of the remote computer to connect directly. The default port used for direct IP access is 21118 and you may change this port by clicking the pen icon next to “Enable Direct IP Access” on the menu near the ID.
You may also need to allow the following domains in your firewall (for devices outside the LAN):
api.hoptodesk.com
signal.hoptodesk.com
signal2.hoptodesk.com
turn.hoptodesk.com
Downloading, Installation, and Running
HopToDesk can run in portable mode or installed on desktop operating systems.
Installation is optional, and will install the HopToDesk service which runs in the background and listens for incoming connections,
allowing the device to be accessible at all times.
Makes me wonder how safe the application really is when it needs the hoptodesk servers.
It might be fine but i have not yet found a security aaudit report.
On the statement
I presume they meant no need to change a firewall which has common ports open by default, that is not the case for UFW in Locked down mode..
The application is a fork of RustToDesk which may be a better choice as it is more transparent, security audited and offers a free tier.
