I made the mistake to let the antiX USB writer create the testingstick with GPT and pmbr_boot options (as I usually do), while I should have known better already: This PC doesn’t accept GPT partitioned drives, its BIOS can only boot from MS-DOS partitioned drives. Even worse: The presence of GPT freezes this PC completely when the BIOS tries to access it. So I had to recreate the stick, this time with the default settings. (Strange thing, even my five years older 32 bit notebook can properly boot from GPT partitioned drives… and this here is a 64 bit device already.)
So now finally my first impression from this 25beta1 live: In one word Great.
– Boots straight to the desktop. Extra fast startup. Never have seen booting nor shutting down this device that fast.
– Direct access to wired network out of the box. (This device doesn’t have WLan)
Some first Observations:
– Observation: The MCP61 Network device shows up as “network bridge”, while I have not configured a bridge. (As said, everything is virgin booted into default from a freshly created USB stick)
– Observation: Clock shows 1 hour wrong time after boot, even when BIOS clock is set properly to UTC. Either a wrong time zone is applied, or daylight saving period not observed properly. Will check what causes this.
– Observation (needs some more detailed inspection still) : The preinstalled firefox keeps on each program start the CPU busy at 100% system load for 1 to 2 minutes (!), without any obvious tasks. After this time, the PC can be used normally again, CPU consumption of firefox goes back to reasonable values. Can be reproduced by closing firefox and opening it again.
– Another observation: Seems the schedutil governor doesn’t step up to the higher frequencies even when 100% system load for a longer period mostly block the system, and the CPU is expected to float between 1,0 GHz and 2,2 / 3,0 GHz; it sticks pervicaciously to 1 GHz. Issue needs further, more detailed analysis.
– Tiny glitch in translation of main menu first level. While in antiX 23.x the entry is properly translated to “neueste Dateien” with a submenu “Liste der neuesten Dateien”, now in antiX 25 the first level reads “Neuesten Dateien”, which looks ridiculous, since this form requires a definite article: Either write “Die neuesten Dateien” or “Neueste Dateien”, both is correct. What is the resource for these first level menu translations set at transifex so it can be fixed?
And here you are the fist system readouts, for now from “default” boot option, nothing special set up nor selected, besides German localisation. More readouts (from the other init systems) to come. Taken immediately after desktop has been reached after boot, from within a terminal emulator window.
