My hope in providing these detailed explanations is that at least one other person will read and learn from this.
Side bar: though I’m a software professional and I’ve been trained to some extent, when it comes to Debian, I had to learn all of this myself, which I did by a lot of reading, then experimenting.
Regarding the removal and addition of packages, at times in the past I’ve deleted one or two packages and they removed a great number of packages in the system. However, if removing a few packages removes a lot, adding a few packages can also add a lot, so over the course of time I’ve located a few packages and through judicious manipulation, I’ve been able to replace almost an entire system with only a handful of commands.
All these methods and techniques are learned through a combination of reading articles, forum posts, learning from others and plain old hard work and experimentation. It didn’t happen for me overnight either.
Before I ever tried Linux I spent months reading and researching, so my first try actually went fairly well. It’s not that way unless a person puts in the work. We’re all beginners at one time or another. I remember my early days in Computer Science. There were many people who were more adept at things than me. I was a disaster on tests back in the early days.
Time, practice, age and experience have all added to a much better experience, but it took a lot of time and effort.
