The Thanksgiving food preparation, and in some cases, the items that can be prepared in advance, are under way for this US American tradition, that celebrates the surviving early settlers, who faced stormy seas, illness, in many cases death from the illnesses, and conflicts on their “newly conquered” land. [Some native American citizens, particularly those who have modernized their traditions, live among all others]; the original tribes who want to maintain their identities and ways of life generally live on “reservations”, where the only really good, fairly recent, sources of income have been the vastly greater number of casinos that have opened across the country.
For those who have an interest in a nice vacation or special occasion activity, these places are quite nice. For others, who have gambling and other additions, they are damaging and dangerous places to be. I’ve visited a few of these places and I affirm the “nice” side of things and also the cautions for those who lack self control.
Another point of interest is that in my retirement community I’ve met a few “native American” citizens, the kind who have integrated with others in our country. All of them that I’ve met are highly skilled in culinary matters – in fact both a father and son have worked here over the past several years. The older one (the father) confided his national origins to me, probably because through conversations with me he knew that I am highly interested in those with racial or cultural traditions that are different than mine. I never seek to change anyone’s traditions, nor will others change mine, except for potentially adding to my culinary palette! I think that the colors of the rainbow are beautiful and I also think that the different cultural differences are also beautiful. I only grieve the political battles that I question; to me I have the opinion that these are started either out of greed, ignorance, or both. Meanwhile, other than a great distribution, I also greatly appreciate reading about the widely different experiences, both in our systems and in our lives; they are the beautiful portraits of things that participants often share.
