What should I do if I want to extend my partition?
If you want to modify the size of your partitions, FIRST thing you have to do is a full backup of the drive. There is a good chance to corrupt the file systems by this.
Then, perform a full check for errors in the filesystem before resizing. On NTFS or FAT type formatted drives additionally run a defragmentation.
Once you have a reliable backup of the drive, you can resize partitions, e.g. in gparted. Therein, fist select the proper device from pulldown. Click on the partition on the device you want to resize. Then, from menu “partition” select “resize/move”. Enter the new size and accept. Check the list of pending changes presented now, and if content, start them by clicking the hooklet in the symbol bar (or select from menu “Edit” the entry “Run all pending tasks”.)
Important: You can only manipulate partitions which are unmounted. This means: You’ll have to do it from within an antiX Live USB stick most likely, if your installed system lives on a partition you plan to resize.
Most likely you’ll have to reduce the size of one partition, before gparted will allow you to move or resize another one, if the drive is completely used. Increasing the size of a partition is only possible if there is free space next to it, so you have possibly to move other partitions around before gparted allowing yo to resize the partition you want to increase.
(Sorry, the precise English wording in the menus might differ slightly from what I used above, since I had to retranslate it back to English from my language. Hopefully you’ll find the entries anyway in gparted.)
Could I now also create a swap file as well?
Yes. You can additionally have more than a single swap active. So basically there is no need to remove the swap partition since you have it already.
