Huh, I thought cloudflare’s only purpose was to slow the internet down by constantly asking me to confirm that I’m human. I didn’t know they actually host (or “operate”?) major websites.
That said, I didn’t notice any sites that I use going down today. In fact, I even had to do cloudflare’s usual “are you human?” thing at one point on annas-archive.org and it seemed to work.
CloudFlare isn’t a service that is frequently down, but I’d not be surprised at all if CloudFlare IS a service that is frequently ATTACKED, because it’s main purpose is that it acts as a content delivery network (CDN) that distributes content globally, protects against cyber threats like DDoS attacks, and offers services such as DNS management and SSL encryption. Therefore you can understand why “the bad guys” would want to disrupt it as much as possible.

It was initially thought that he source of the outage was due to a “hyper-scale” distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. However, this was quickly dismissed.
Instead, Prince (CloudFlare CEO) revealed the incident was “triggered by a change to one of our data systems’ permissions”.
