    But most likely old versions of large programs will not run on a current system, unless you install all the old dependencies as well. If you try that, you will most likely mess up the whole system.

    In Windows you could use old software, because all the stuff, that a program needs, is part of the package.
    In Linux these libraries and scripts are part of the system. Applications and OS must match.

    So my advice is: Get stronger hardware. There are stores, which sell used business hardware with warranty at decent prices. Two years ago I have bought a Dell Latitude E7470 for 130,-€. It is 9 years old now and looks like new. Certainly it is fast enough for Gimp.
