Managing multiple init systems that may accumulate kernel versions over time

How come?
I thought kernel is init agnostic.
(Though I know MX 25 had issues with the used kernel and multi-init systemd + the other(s) and split into several ISOs.)
Running an installed system may accumulate kernel versions over time, if user installs new versions provided, but how do multiple inits contribute to that?

MX Cleanup that handles the removal of old kernels and unnecessary firmware packages.
