thanks for the many answers – this appears to be a VERY helpful community.
I unearthed a 64 GB USB stick (new/never used) and tried to obtain a persistent image (screenshots 1 and 2) – same result as before.
I did NOT download the antiX ISO again, because the SHA checksum had worked out (just as with the MX ISO), and AFAIK it would be HIGHLY unlikely to get TWO bad downloads with correct checksums.
Not Sure about F3 – I THOUGHT I should press it over the open USB stick window – all it does there is split the window and duplicate its content.

Out of curiosity, I used the function built into Mint 22.2 to create a bootable image on the same stick, then ran the Live USB Maker again (screenshots 3 to 8).
I hope this helps the experts – which I definitely am not..

P.S. Just a wild guess: can AppArmor have anything to do with my problem?
So far I haven’t done anything with it (once I learned that it’s pre-installed in Mint) beyond downloading a bunch of profiles from Mint’s app repository – only some profiles are in Complain Mode – currently trying to find out if I can temporarily disable AppArmor. (screenshot 9 – pops up at the moment of Live USB Maker’s error message.)
