    alpha=0

    is set (and uncommented) in the preferences file, Conky works again.

    Alternately, you could leave alpha=1 in IceWM and use a compositor like xcompmgr, but you then also need to add “own_window_argb_visual yes” in the Conky config. This also happens to fix the longstanding problem with the wallpaper not aligning properly if you use a zzzfm desktop and have the IceWM taskbar on the top of the screen.
