    I just updated 1,422 packages using apt-get dist-upgrade with siduction, a Debian Sid distribution, and actually there were probably a dozen or so additional packages upgraded because I did a few more just before the dist-upgrade in order to have one of my favorite editors in place. Anyway, it not only worked, I did not have to babysit it at all.

    The key is that there were no major library changes that were “in process”, though since it was at least 66 days since this computer has been accessed, according to one of the other distros here, which needed a file system check, so that’s how I discovered that detail.

    Anyway, the evidence is in: you CAN do major updates with dist-upgrade as long as the food chain can be updated in full, not with pieces missing. This upgrade got practically the entire system upgraded!
