I just happen to have such RTL8188 USB dongle (although I do not typically use one to connect to the network) I am able to confirm that indeed Connman appears to fail to recognize it as a network interface. Also to confirm that MX25 does not seem to have a problem with this network adapter and connects to the network without any issue.
At first I thought it is missing firmware that is causing this, however I performed some tests and it appears that the Network Manager instead of Connman recognizes and connects fine.
I have seen some info on the Internet about some issues with Connman detecting such RTL8188 network adapter and some solutions but the easiest one I tried was just to switch to Network Manager to make it work.
For me Connman is mostly working, although I just logged in for the first time to my updated antiX 26 instance that was previously a test antiX 26 RC1 configuration. I came in with s6-66 and the networking didn’t connect with Connman. Since this has NOT been a problem, I just rebooted and Connman came up cleanly and quickly, so there may be a timing issue with the initial configuration. Something I haven’t had to do much any more also helped in the past: toggle between Ceni and Connman 1-2 times. All that said, the s6-66 is the only place I’ve seen any difficulty at all, and it’s not been frequent there either. Regarding the RTL8188, I don’t have that; ironically I DO have a Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit interface, but that’s Ethernet, and there’s nowhere around here that I can even use it! My current wireless card is Qualcomm QCNFA765 Wireless Network Adapter and that has been working well with excellent throughput.
