I agree, it looks interesting. Is it possible to see the code set for what you have?
Also to note. Newer versions of gtk will not have a system tray option. So desktop mode will be daemon mode. There is already setup a single instance only option where any attempt to launch app-select again just toggles the window visibility of the first. This should easily allow a daemon mode without the system tray and instead have a launcher.
