This is why it is SO important to back up systems.
I’ve written many times how I have a lot of my key stuff in many places – stored on multiple distributions, many systems, and also on multiple hardware. For a few key things that don’t change much I store them in other places, such as Email, cloud storage, etc. My whole approach is that even if one or two of those things are destroyed, there is still another place to retrieve the information.
One time I had a situation where I forgot which hardware I was on and I began to perform an operation that, had it continued, would have wiped out the entire multi-distro setup. As it was, a good percentage of it WAS wiped out. I took the occasion to reorganize my disk partitions and reinstall systems, but the fact that I could do this and not lose everything was because I had information even from those systems replicated on multiple removable devices, so my mistake was not tragic, it was merely time consuming to put everything back in place.
The moral of the story is to have real, complete, external backups. Traditional backups in “the old days” used to be to magnetic tape. That’s an external media. By today’s standard that’s a really slow way to backup, and with today’s volume of data, it wouldn’t work; that’s why we have more modern media sources, but there are STILL completely external back up sources; that’s important; this way the media can be protected to some degree. For super sensitive stuff even backups have backups, and they are located in DIFFERENT geographic locations. I’ve tried to implement a less expensive, but conceptually similar mechanism for my personal stuff and it’s worked very well for me.
