Is it really that easy?
recently yes, when getting multiple versions and devices to use a single bookmark set
without any data leaving a premises.
But Mozilla often makes changes forwards and back so sadly no guarantee it will work next time..

Which is why I have completely moved to LibreWolf, it comes with sane settings.

Back to problem.
Recent versions of Firefox should have a bookmarks backup in the profile folder, according to
linked text at the mozilla site.
After more reading I think that Firefox improve features, performance, and stability between
updates may be one factor in new profile creation.

Below may be useful.
Click the menu button and select Settings.
Select the Privacy & Security panel on the left.
Go down to the Firefox Data Collection and Use section.
Uncheck the Allow Firefox to improve features, performance, and stability between updates checkbox
to opt out of automatically getting browser changes between Firefox updates.
