Based on your comments/conclusions I will definitely look at replacing the video card as soon as my budget allows.
I fully agree with your comment about the missing RAM stick. Unfortunately that’s turned in to bit of another budgeting issue. a single matching 16GB stick is insane $$ now.. even replacing the single 16GB stick with 2x8GB is mind blowing (but my likely choice)… how much prices have sky rocketed since this build….. (thank you AI data centre memory hogs…..) still it’s been that 3 stick configuration since I built this 5 years ago and that was only due to available local stock levels at the time. I always planned to populate the missing skt… some day LOL
I think I’ll be staying here with antiX for a while yet.
I’m 64, retired engineer on a very tight budget, I don’t game… at all.. I do a bit of KICAD electronics CADing and I wouldn’t call that taxing on my system at all. the RAM is for my very large spreadsheets, database, torrenting and handbrake movie resizing workloads. very little in the way of direct video loading IMO. now that I know where the weakest link in my system is, I’ll make sure that all other apps are shut down when I do anything in the way of vid work.. even watching YT… it does explain why I’ve had crashes in the past.
Another possibility is that I ditch the graphics card outright and just use the onboard GPU (Ryzen3-G) and the let the CPU access my 48GB for the required vid RAM?
I think I’ll experiment with that tomorrow… it’s getting late here in NZ now…
