Think of all the young programmers at Google, Apple, Red Hat, et al. that would suddenly be out of a job and probably living on the streets if software wasn’t constantly being developed anymore.
I do sometimes think that’s what’s behind this shift. There’s constantly more and more people going into “software engineering” as a career and how else are they all going to be put to work?
I see exactly the same thing in computer/information security, too. There’s clearly now more people working in that field than there needs to be to address real-world exploits, so most of them end up developing prophylactic security concepts that just make my computer harder to use in order to protect me from the imaginary threats these security specialists dream up.
You have a good point. Some of the best software I’ve ever seen was developed by just a few people at most.
