    I finally figured out the solution!!! If I select Print preview, the Print button is immediately available and it prints right away! Why just printing without wanting to see the preview doesn’t work right, is still a mystery. Gratitude to @Sybok, whose help really got me to learn a bunch of cups stuff and even printing from the terminal! Unfortunately none of the pdf programs work this way, so 20 minute wait is still mandatory with them. Tried: Evince, gv and mu. Usually I want to print ordinary txt docs, so it’s not a huge inconvenience.

    antiX 26 Stephen Kapos 5.10.240-antiX.1-486-smp on a Pentium IV @ 2 Ghz and 2 GB of RAM. 2002 Gateway desktop. 140 GB hdd has "/" and 100 GB partition on 2nd drive has "/Home" using IceWM de. Dual booting with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on another partition.
