You are right @Robin. In 2016 Trump had his first presidency; in 2020 voters went the other way, though Trump did NOT peacefully surrender the White House. Throughout the 2020-2024 presidency, reporters repeatedly referred to the President as “dementia Joe”, which may have been closer to the truth than his party was comfortable with. That party chose to offer a woman as the candidate of choice.
During their debates, Trump again ran for office; though plenty of people had seen enough earlier, there were enough people who were against putting a woman in office that Trump was elected AGAIN, to the disappointment of a large minority. Several organizations have tried multiple times to remove him from office without success.
Most countries who have a long history of political dominance tend to remain that way for 100 to 200 years; only a few go past that; over the past 1000 years I’m not aware of any country to have political and financial dominance; I wouldn’t put it past China to get their next; they’ve very patiently put together a very strong economy that seems able to undercut most other countries in price and availability of many products; that was once the domain of the USA, but that’s been lessening for decades now.
Whether it’s China or someone else, it’s just a matter of time before other countries take over economic leadership in a much stronger way, and it could lead to dominance in other areas as well. As far as my home country is concerned, we’ve long been told to be respectful of our leadership. Unfortunately I have not seen very much recently that is worthy of any respect.
At least right now there seems to be at least some remaining freedom of speech; we’ll have to see if that is removed too; if so, that’s the “end” of the “American dream”.
As far as “isms” go, at one point in time, I thought that “socialism” in some form had some promise, but we’ve not seen any really good implementations of it; socialized medicine might have some hope, but any forced governments seem doomed to failure, at least in my “rose-tainted glasses point of view.
