@brandonirizarry That’s a nice goal and idea. We’ve used several different forum styles over the years. We are always constrained by certain factors:
1. We do want to have an accessible forum.
2. Cost prevents us from acquiring and maintaining the number one forum software.
3. What we do instead is get the most cost efficient compromise, and utilize the skills of those who operate and administer the forum on our behalf.
What we’ve ended up with is a pretty solid overall forum; we’ve greatly improved the security and reliability, and mitigated, over and over, attempted break-ins and disruptions to our services.
I’m a moderator here, but NOT an owner or any kind of regular financial contributor. Instead, what I do is contribute to the overall watching of the site, and assist those who lead this phenomenal effort.
So without billions or trillions of dollars to spend, we instead aim to provide a service free of charge to others, particularly those who do not have the resources to continually purchase new hardware. In some ways I’m fortunate because I can occasionally get reasonably good hardware, albeit seriously discounted end of production or refurbished units; I still do my best to keep all purchases as far under $400-500 as possible. For some people under $100 or even under $50 is more likely the typical scenario, and still others pick up discarded hardware from others.
Given all of this, frugal everything is the name of the game, making the absolute most out of everything.
As far as editors go, any of these editors are more than able to work with even an old computer and antiX, given that the lightest Web browser capable of working in today’s HTML5 environment are orders of magnitude heavier consumers of resources – memory, CPU and storage resources.
Formatting? I typically write the majority of my notes to roll over each line, so they use the full width of the text widget. In the past I’ve written message to fit within 68-72 character width; I have the techniques and resources to do either one.
