I have done more experimenting with MXD, particularly that now dinit boots all the way to desktop for me…
These are some observations:
– Dinit kind of grows on me. I like this init more than other inits, although I still need to understand some dinit services, what their role is.
– I changed XFCE desktop style completely, but such cosmetic choices are a personal matter.
– Trimmed down intitial memory footprint, mostly by eliminating many elements in XFCE autostart, such as picom, etc. I got down the initial memory footprint close to 350M measured by lxtask or htop. Still a bit too high for my liking, some more stuff left that can be trimmed down, but good enough for now.
– Installed Openbox and lxpanel as parts of LXDE, although not to replace XFCE but have such option to boot either XFCE or LXDE from login manager. Install went smoothly with no issues. I could have installed also icewm, I think, but LXDE panel is easier to configure. Now I can choose whether to use XFCE or LXDE (although I do not want desktop icons). With LXDE desktop memory footprint is now well below 300M.
– Install LXQT was not feasible, too many compatibility issues.
Now, that I have such modified MXD I have some questions as well:
– You chose MX Tools, and no antiX Control Centre. Was it because you started this respin from MX, using now antiX infrastructure repo? I like both, just curious if antiX Control Centre and tools presented any compatibility problems in developing this dinit XFCE respin.
– Ctrl-Alt-Del presents an exit dialog box but Shutdown and Restart do not reboot but just log off to login screen. Desktop-Session-Exit from antiX seems not there. Is this the reason you left Shutdown and Reboot buttons explicit on XFCE panel?
