I tried the two recommended apps (nm-tray and connman-gtk) noted in previous posts above and can not get them to work.
Right now, nm-applet starts up in the task bar correctly, it just doesn’t allow me to toggle the VPN (like it’s a permission issue).
If I kill nm-applet in the taskbar, and then launch it manually with sudo, it shows up in the taskbar and lets me actually toggle the VPN. So how do I get it to start in the taskbar like its currently doing but with permissions?
Some system tools require extra permissions, for example, a few of them require 1755 or 4755 permissions; I have no idea if that’s needed here or not, but executable programs do require the x permission and all of them have to have root group access.
I’m familiar with Connman/CMST and Ceni, but not with network manager but I do know that you do NOT want to have both of them running at the same time. They can both be installed, it’s just that only one network management program can have control of the network communication ports at any given time, so make sure that only one of them is actually running; if more than one are running that alone could be causing problems; other than that, the other experts probably know much more than I do.
