Interesting that you mention Waterfox @Xunzi_23. Just yesterday I pulled out a 2025 antiX test build; I think it was Beta 2 if I remember; anyway I had Waterfox installed on that one for some reason. While I was running it I did some informal checks of browser memory usage. While the test was not scientific nor did it perfectly verify EXACTLY the same scenarios in 100% of the cases, I was able to get a good general idea about initial memory use, and indeed Waterfox did well without all of the extra junk present.
With just a single tab open Ungoogled Chromium beats everything else, though with 3-4 tabs open there’s a less clear advantage; one other thing it seems to do well, and this depends on the settings that are set – is how well it releases memory. There are options to retain or release cache available; with the default, it releases memory willingly. For those who frequently visit and revisit the same site, I understand that there are speed benefits for retaining cache, but I like the way the default behaves because overall performance is good; Waterfox probably comes in a close second in a lot of these exercises.
