    I know too little about the GUI file manager, hence I can hardly give any advice. Sorry about that.
    I would speculate this could be possibly related to filesystem type.
    In case you have a USB with the same filesystem type, you could plug it in and see whether it is mounted and available|displayed as desired (with ‘+’) or not; this could disprove or corroborate my speculation.
