I’m still having a good time with my antiX 23.2 setups. On my newest hardware I only have antiX 23.2 Full Runit; on my HP-14 and my Dell Inspiron 5558 I have both the Full Runit and the Full sysVinit setup.
On one hand I appreciate all that we’ve done with antiX 26 — including building and configuring real runit services. On antiX 23.2, I love runit, but as our 25/26 release was being developed I finally realized that for the past few years we’ve been running sysVinit implementations of several runit services; Version 26 is the first antiX release where we have correctly implemented native services for each of the init alternatives. We’ve done a particularly good job with runit and dinit; runit is now our featured version for the first time; we decided to retain sysVinit, but in most other places, sysVinit is dying off; not sure how much longer various distributions will be able to fully support it.
But back to antiX 23.2. One of our really good forum members, and I’m sorry that he’s gone elsewhere – CaNa – Calcium Sodium – did some REALLY good work with the audio and video. He wrote some notes; I took what he wrote, turned it into a script and fine tuned that stuff on antiX 23.2. In addition to that, I cut out a lot of other stuff that I didn’t use, and I’ve started to do that in antiX 26 too, but I’ve got it fine tuned in antiX 23.2, so at least for now, antiX 23.2 runs so well that I’m keeping it around as long as this continues to be the case.
My antiX 26 stuff is getting optimized too, but for the reader wondering about this, our upstream stuff keeps getting larger and larger with each release, despite the fact that we do everything we can to keep it efficient. Nineteen, not quite twenty years ago, I was able to run 32-bit antiX on a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop computer and consume under 60 MB with the initial startup of the 2007 version of antiX. Our 23.2 version needs 210-220 MB; the best I can squeeze out of antiX is a little over 230 MB most of the time, and close to 250 MB unless I cut out quite a few of the default processes that start up in the default image.
Perhaps that gives you an idea why I still treasure antiX 23.2, even though I also love antiX 26 – the new release has many cool features, but to simply read or write Email or blog posts, antiX 23.2 is plenty, and that is why I will keep it until standard support expires; I won’t go out to some other site and pay money to get longer Bookworm support; in fact, by 2029 I may even think about getting different hardware, and then I may need antiX 26 or something newer. In the meantime though I’m going to enjoy antiX 23.2 for as long as possible.
