As far as what I’ve been watching in the evenings with my wife, we’ve been using Netflix recently to “review” the first three seasons of Sullivan’s Crossing. On the regular “tube” the show is actually still producing one show per week. Harry “Sully” Sullivan, played by Scott Patterson (who also played “Luke” in “Gilmore Girls”, is the owner of Sullivan’s Crossing in “Timberlake, Nova Scotia”, not far away from real life Halifax, Nova Scotia. Maggie Sullivan is played by Morgan Kohan, Tom Jackson plays the part of Frank Cranebear, Andrea Menard plays Edna Cranebear, and Chad Michael Murray plays Cal Jones; there are several other strong contributors to the cast; it’s a good family series about real people with real problems that they have to overcome. With the help of their friends and community they overcome a number of serious matters,
My wife, a retired high school counselor, really likes shows like this one: she can identify with quite a few of the characters, particularly several of the women, whom (in her words, not mine) she says they are “mamsy pamsy women”, meaning they are an emotional mess instead of using their considerable intelligence to overcome their issues.
Quite frankly though, if we are being honest, haven’t many, perhaps most of us, at one time or another, made many poor decisions? I’m not “mamsy pamsy” in any way, but I’ve made more than my share of mistakes or errors in judgement, so these series, while fiction, they expose many of the things that we may find ourselves guilty of unless we are very careful, so the shows are both entertaining and a practical reminder of being more patient and less impulsive, using the examples and suggestions of others along with our own wisdom and choices to make good, healthy life decisions! So at times it’s entertainment combined with a dose of reality!
