If you’re still getting AV01 videos from Youtube with Ungoogled Chromium, there’s ways of forcing other codecs there, too. I think it requires an extension like this one: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/enhanced-h264ify/omkfmpieigblcllmkgbflkikinpkodlk
It’s been a while since I’ve used it and maybe things have changed, but I seem to recall that my Core2 Duo system could do 1080p Youtube in Chromium if I forced H.264. Chromium’s software decoder is definitely a lot more efficient on weak CPUs than Firefox’s when I’ve compared them directly, though Firefox’s seems to be able to handle higher resolution videos like 1440p+ better on a capable CPU.
Many thanks anti-apXos. Using Ungoogled Chromium, with enhanced-h264ify installed on it (photo1), as you suggested, I am now able to stream YT videos at 1080p (photo2); thanks Brian too for initially suggesting this browser.
The caveat is that if I go ‘full-screen’, on either the laptop screen or an external monitor, then the stutter returns. However, this is still much improved over what I had before. When playing in a normal-sized YT window, on the 17″ laptop screen, there is neither any stutter nor any momentary synchronous pausing of the audio/video at 1080p.
The stats from the Xine media player show that around 10% of frames were dropped over the 7-minute live music video (photo2). At the 30 fps, that the Xine media player appears to be preset at, this drop in frame-rate isn’t noticeable – I think the threshold for smooth video is around 24fps.
Thanks again – have a good day 🙂
Happy man here!
