I saw some passing early in the series that reminded me of some of the best Boston Celtics teams, but the winning game was primarily a master class by Jalen Brunson, recognizing how fouls are called and using his skills to start, stop, lean, and intentionally cause body contact as he initiated shots; he got a number of 3 point shots.
While the Spurs expended their energy early, consistently the Knicks saved their absolute best for the second half and especially the last five minutes of the game. They did this even in their one loss. Moreover, though they were the THIRD seed in the Eastern Conference, from the beginning of April through the Finals, they were the “hottest” team in the NBA. Well deserved championship for the Knicks, 53 years – I was in high school when Walt Frazier, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Dave Debusshure, Willis Read, and Bill Bradley led their team to its previous championship.
I root for the Detroit Pistons (my original “home team”) and the Boston Celtic (home team for 27 years of my career). Nevertheless, I have respect for each championship team. One “good thing” is that we’ve had a different championship team for around a decade now; The Golden State Warriors may be the only team over the past ten years to “win again” during that era, but it’s been at least four years since they had their last championship. That’s good for the league.
