Think about the Conky.
Conky is an information panel.
I don’t need it to run my system, I can find the information I need at the command line.
Is it useful, maybe, some people like it being there – myself, I usually disable it – just personal preference.
Remember though, it does use up some resources, of which old machines have little to spare.
Does it need to look fancy, no, but if you want to, you can make it look amazing, if you have the spare resources.
