They ended up having to return to nouveau, but maybe that is not necessaryily your case.

Apparently,
need better graphics card hardware support – use nvidia,
need higher-resolution tty – use nouveau.
I have given up.

Most importand, did you do ?
update-grub2
or did you do ?
sudo update-grub
/usr/sbin/update-grub
and
/usr/sbin/update-grub2 contain no differences
and no differences encountered in running as genuine root vs sudo
