A) Go back to a previous kernel if the new one isn’t performing as expected: YES. The same as when you intsalled the latest 4.9.0-XXX kernel, you can select any older kernel from the Grub advanced boot menu (and then remove the unwanted kernel).
B) Removing a kernel (making sure it is not the one in use).
Synaptic, cli-aptiX, etc. unfortunately DONT inform you what is the current kernel you are using. If at any point you want to know the version you are using, use the command
uname -r
or, with a bit more info
inxi -S
and then remove whatever kernel you don’t want that is NOT the current kernel with synaptic/cli-aptiX. There is a GUI to manage kernels in more heavy/powerful package installers, and I am not sure if there is any simple tool only for kernel management in the repos.
